又到了从真题中捡宝贝的时候。今天的三个表达均选自 2021.6 的六级真题，这三套真题简直是宝藏啊，我已经挖了好几期，还没把其中的精华写作短语写完。

01

lose your edge

There are some who say Marconi lost his edge when commercial broadcasting came along; he didn’t see that radio could or should be used to frivolous ends.

译文：有人说，商业广播出现后，马可尼失去了优势；他认为收音机不可以或不应该用来做无聊的事情。

这篇文章介绍了马可尼的故事。跟我们现在之所以能够使用无线电通信，创始人马可尼功不可没。他的全名是 Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi，诞生在意大利一个富裕的家庭中。优越的条件没有让他耽于玩乐，相反马可尼从小热爱科学，沉迷于各种实验中。

1895 年，年仅 21 岁的他成了世界上第一台实用无线电报系统的发明者。此后，他不断改进技术，并于 1901 年，实现了无线电穿越大西洋的壮举。1909年，马可尼荣获诺贝尔物理学奖，被称作「无线电之父」。

我们爱用 advantage 来表示「优点，优势」，但你肯定用烦了对吧？那我们就来看看 edge 的用法。除了「边缘」，edge 也常用来表示 something that gives you an advantage over others「优势」。所以 lose your edge 是指「失去优势」。提醒大家，表示此义时，edge 要么不可数，要么作为单数可数名词使用。如果写成 lose your edges，那可错咯❌。

反义短语：gain / get / have an edge over sb

反过来，「占据优势」该怎么表达呢？我们把动词换成 gain 或者 get 或 have。那如果你想说「比某人更有优势，更胜一筹」呢？后面再加上 over sb 就好。

The next version of the software will have the edge over its competitors.

该软件的下一个版本会比竞争对手略胜一筹。

2020 年 7 月的六级第一篇阅读中也出现了 edge 的这个用法，我们一起来读一读。

尽管 emergence 只是四级词汇，但极少在写作中见到大家使用，但这个单词出现频率非常高，不管是四六级」、专四专八、考研还是雅思托福，它的存在感都很强，而且超好用。emergence 表示 the process or event of its coming into existence「出现，兴起」，与 appearance，advent 类似。

所以，如果想说「互联网的兴起」，那就是 the emergence of the Internet，我们可以用它来代替用腻的 the appearance of the Internet。除了互联网外，你可以用它来表示某种行业、技术的兴起。下面我们来看《经济学人》的描述。

The stage is set for the emergence of a new health-tech industry that will redefine the biotech-pharmaceutical landscape.

一个新的医疗科技产业崛起的舞台已经搭建完毕，这将重新定义生物科技制药的格局。

in the emergence of sth

in 常用来表示在某个时间段中，所以加上 in 后，整个词组的意思变成「在某事物兴起的过程」中。如果你掌握了这个单词的用法，相信你在 2012 年 12 月四级考试时能够一秒就看出 33 划线处正好缺的就是 emergence。

This is down to“hereditarian” science and a recent paper claimed “differences in exam performance between pupils attending selective and non-selective schools mirror the genetic differences between them”.

译文：这种论调源于「遗传决定论」学说。近期一篇论文声称，来自精英学校和普通学校的学生在考试成绩上的差异反映出二者的基因存在差异。

A is down to B.

最后我们来看个「不起眼」但外刊常用的表达。表示因果关系，除了 because, so 外，还有哪些选择？此前，我们在中讲过 stem from sth 这个表达，今天我们来学习另一个可以表示因果的搭配。

be down to sb / sth 意思是 to be caused by a particular person or thing「由……引起或造成」，不过需要提醒大家，我们不能搞错了谁是因，谁是果。在句型 A is down to B 中， B 是因，A 是果 。这种因果关系既可以是正面的，也可以是负面的。

She claimed her problems were down to the media.

她声称她的问题是媒体造成的。

再来看 2021 年《经济学人》中的一个句子。

That, according to the regulator, is down to a deal struck between Apple and Google.

按监管机构的说法，这是由于苹果和谷歌达成了协议。
